New Blog

Looking forward to starting to blog again.  I love talking about teaching and plan to share ideas I come across that assist us to increase the level of student engagement in our classrooms.
In our school district a large scale research project was conducted to look at student engagement in the classroom, it was called the Pipeline Project.  The schools from which data was gathered had a disproportionally high number of students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds - the reason for this was the idea that these students may be more difficult to engage and would gain the greatest advantage from taking part in the study.
The research findings show that approximately

  • 60% of students were compliant and engaged in their learning.
  • 8% of students were non-compliant and disengaged
  • 12% were engaged, non-compliant
  • and 20% of students were compliant BUT not engaged.
This means that in our classroom at any time there are approximately 20% of our students who are sitting there, they may be smiling at us - perhaps they're staring out the window... but one thing that we do know - they are not learning.

It also means that there are approximately 12% who are learning, but probably distracting those around them - and these students may well not be achieving to their full capacity.

I find this data fascinating.  As I aim to have 100% of students engaged in my classroom I would like to share what I find that works.. and probably some things that don't along the way.
